Say Cheese

This is for a friend who is going through a bit of a rough patch. The inside says "focus on today and you'll be ok." I think it's a good reminder for her right now.

I used the camera2stamp set and coordinating die from the Stamps of Life for the camera. The circles are from the Bunch of Fun Circles set by My Creative Time. The solid paper is Recollections, and the patterned piece is from KI Memories. I put some Glossy Accents on the lens and view finder to make it look more like glass. The sequins are from Cartwright.

hello my friend

It's summer and that means I have more time to play...happiness!! One of my goals for the summer is to participate in some challenges. I miss doing that. The challenge this week at Just Us Girls is to use a stacked die cut.

I used a cute "hello" die from The Stamps of Life. I let the paper be the main focal point of the card and just added a few things. It's really simple, but I like the way it turned out. The stamp is from KAndrew Designs.

Cherry Limeade card - finally

The challenge this week at BBTB2 was to use a sign or banner on your project. I have always liked the Cherry Limeade cartridge, but have never used it. This was the perfect opportunity! I really like how it turned out, very festive.

It still never ceases to amaze me just how well the Cricut Explore cuts. Those words are all cut out and the letters are no wider than 1/16". I was worried when I forgot to change the setting to intricate, but it worked great without it.

The patterned paper is from my stash and the solid is all Recollections. The sequins are from Cartwright and there is clear Wink of Stella on the drink and the rind of the lime.

Here is my inspiration for you

I recently purchased the Sesame Street Seasons cartridge and decided this would be a good time to use it. Cookie turned out really cute, and I love the box. I'm sure I will be making more of them. All of the card stock is Recollections and the twine is from my stash.

The box comes in 2 sizes. I used the larger one for this project. This is two pieces of 8.5" x 11" card stock, so it will hold quite a few cookies :-)

I used red-line tape to hold the box together. It's always a good idea to use something pretty strong if you're going to actually use the item. I just used Tombow mono-multi for the window because it doesn't actually move.

Here it is before adding Cookie Monster.

I used the scoring tool to add a little bit of a furry look to Cookie. It worked pretty well (sorry about the picture...my camera didn't like taking the close up).

If you would like to create this box, here is a link to the Design Space file. Cookie will cost $$ if you don't already own him as he is a licensed image. The box is part of the subscription.

I also have a little blog candy to give away. You will receive a $10.00 Michael's gift card if you are chosen as the winner on my blog. I really love how the Recollections card stock cuts in the Explore and use it almost exclusively. You can try it for yourself if you haven't already, or put the money toward something you've been wanting. (If you don't have a Michael's close by we'll work something out.) Please make sure you follow the rules above to be eligible.

Now that you have seen my character go visit Liz at her blog Unik by YES and check out her amazing creativity. There is a  list of all the designers on the blog hop below

Happy Hopping

Last, but not least...graduation part 3 (non-crafty)

T
Shy, quiet, reserved but there was something deep underneath. They were a pair, he and #4 (yes, there are actually more than 3). My co-teacher and I each gravitated to one. They were in class together, came for help together. We all laughed and gave each other a hard time while we did math. It was fun. Lunch and after school laughter covering the frustrations they both shared while trying to learn Algebra in an overcrowded class. They made it, both of them, through their freshman and sophomore years.

Then junior year came. I had both of them again.  If you walked into my class you would not have thought he was doing what he needed to do. He usually had one leg up on the desk, or he was lying on top of one or more of them. There was usually movement involved. This was how he needed to be in class. That was made very clear when he took a standardized test and got the 4th highest grade in the school on the math portion.

And there were problems at home. At one point T thought he would be kicked out of the house. He wasn't doing anything bad, there were just issues and he was 18. And I told him he would not be homeless and he would get his diploma. He was 18, he could stay with me until he graduated because he was worth it. He changed after that. He started acting like he was worth it. He took on mentor roles and excelled at working with other students. He stumbled some, but he kept going.

He started out his senior year in a high school math class but he wanted to try a college class. He did it, but wasn't able to complete it in time, so he stopped. He got a job, but had no car, so he would long board everywhere. He was late to school often because it took so long to get there. But he came. Then he got a car. Then the car broke. He had to save to fix it...and someone else broke it and now it's still broken because there is only so much money. And sometimes that money is used for other things like helping friends from church who barely have running water. So he boards again.

Then there was the essay. It explained so much he wasn't able to say verbally. The feeling of being a failure because he was so much older than his classmates. The fear being called on to read out loud because it was terrifyingly hard. People thinking he wasn't paying attention because he had to work ahead so he wouldn't feel stupid. He couldn't stay with the class and keep up. He had to work ahead to keep up. The fear of never graduating always looming over his head. Finding someone who saw him and helped him through the stumbling blocks and feeling great about being able to mentor other students through those same blocks. It's a powerful read, full of self-awareness.

He enrolled in an online math class to make up the last credit he needed. He finished his math class at 11 a.m. on the last day of school for seniors. He sat there for a minute, started to cry and said, "I never thought I would ever actually graduate". He will and I will be there to watch. He has my number and he better keep in touch. I don't want to miss him.

Getting Sketchy at FCCB

Happy Monday and welcome to another Monday challenge!

Challenge #252-Follow the Sketch

This Weeks Sponsor

Bugaboo Stamps

The prize is 7 digital stamps!

Create a project inspired by the sketch below-

For inspiration see:  http://retrosketches.blogspot.ca/2012/07/retrosketches-22.html

To qualify for the prize, be sure to use at least 1 Cricut cut on your project and if it's not obvious, let us know what cartridge you used. If you use a Cricut Explore machine, at least one cut must be from the Cricut catalog of images.

For my card this week I used the sketch and this cute elephant digital stamp from Bugaboo Stamps called Spring Elephant 2. You can find it here if you would like one of your very own. I used a combination of Promarkers and Copics to color with. I didn't try for a whole lot of blending, just a few shadows here and there...super simple.

I used images from the Wild Card cartridge for the clouds and the flowers. I also used a basic rectangle and re-sized it several times for all of the background pieces. The patterned paper is from American Crafts and the solid is all Recollections. I used a Darice embossing folder for the white piece and a Cuttlebug folder for the swirls. I like the way it turned out, fun and whimsical.

Please come play with us this week. Bugaboo has some great images that you could win! Have a great week.
